No rigging in GB polls: PM

* Gilani says rigging charges by Opp have become routine

By Zulfiqar Ghuman

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday rejected the opposition’s allegations of rigging in Thursday’s election for the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly.

Gilani said it was a sensitive region and the government should not give a message of interference by Pakistan in the election.

“Gilgit-Baltistan is not a part of Pakistan. It is a part of Kashmir. We should not give a message of interference in these areas by Pakistan, as there is no difference between Pakistan and India in Kashmir,” he said.

Routine: Gilani said rigging charges by the opposition had become a routine matter in Pakistan and such rumours did rounds after every election in the country. “Even the Pakistan People’s Party participated in the 2008 elections under protest. It has become a routine matter in Pakistan,” the prime minister said, adding that every effort had been made to hold a free and fair election in Gilgit-Baltistan.
